About
Mayra is a non-disabled, cisgender, heterosexual settler located on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam speaking people. She is a racialized, Mexican, immigrant from Colima, where she lived before moving to so-called Canada. Mayra has lived experiences with racial trauma, depression and anxiety. She understands the complexities of navigating mental health challenges and connection between them and systemic oppression. Her work as a counsellor is influenced by her unique blend of lived experiences and social identities.
Mayra centers justice-oriented values in her work as a Student Counsellor and offers an integrative approach to therapy. She draws from client-centered, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive practices. She believes that counselling is an act of bravery that leads to significant growth, self-understanding, and positive change that aligns with the client’s aspirations. She collaborates with clients through this transformative process, inviting vulnerability and uncertainty as the birthplace of possibilities. Mayra offers a space in which moments of choice can become clear, offering opportunities to learn or unlearn, and honoring where clients are at.
Clients working alongside Mayra can expect counselling sessions that are rooted in warm, collaborative, safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate care. She meets each unique person’s journey with openness and curiosity, fostering an exploration that feels comfortable for the client.
Mayra's support is informed by narrative therapy, attachment theory, somatic therapy, mindfulness, polyvagal theory, solution-focused therapy, and intersectional feminism tailored to the client's needs. She assists clients in navigating life transitions, experiences of ongoing oppression, career changes, identity work, anxiety, and depression. She supports clients in getting a sense of detrimental relationship patterns, and nurturing their self-awareness, trust, and self-compassion.
When she's not learning, Mayra enjoys chasing sunrises, practicing yoga, connecting with nature, savoring coffee, birdwatching, and engaging in meaningful conversations with people.
